Used predominantly to treat infections, metronidazole belongs to the nitroimidazoles antibiotics class. Though not useful for viral infections, such as the flu or common cold, it can be used to treat protozoal and bacterial infections because it is capable of stopping growth in both cases. Further, it is commonly used to complement stomach ulcer medication.
Those prescribed the medication should inform their doctors immediately if they have liver disease, a blood disorder, nerve or seizure disorders, or a condition that affects either the stomach or intestines, as their dosages will need to be altered. While taking metronidazole, patients should avoid drinking alcohol, as doing so can cause side effects, such as nausea, faster heartbeats, and skin irritation.
